A specific regulatory gap drove my choice of specialisation. Climate Change Adaptation and Policy serves a different function: it situates impact regulation within the broader governance architecture of nationally determined contributions and adaptation planning, which matters because Ecuador's EIA regime is being revised under its 2021 Climate Action Plan. Together these modules move me from field observation to regulatory design thinking, a progression I cannot replicate through practice alone. For my dissertation, I intend to examine whether Ecuador's current EIA screening criteria adequately capture climate-driven ecosystem change in high-altitude wetland systems. Using spatial data from the Antisana Ecological Reserve alongside regulatory documentation from MAATE, I would test whether the thresholds triggering full assessment correlate with the ecological tipping points identified in recent Andean climate-sensitivity literature. The Climate, Environment and Sustainability track provides the methodological training in climate impact modelling and policy analysis that this question requires; without it, the dissertation would remain descriptive rather than prescriptive. Beyond the MSc, this specialisation positions me to pursue doctoral research on adaptive EIA frameworks for tropical mountain ecosystems — a field where empirical work is sparse and where UCL's Institute for Sustainable Resources offers relevant supervisory expertise. My longer-term academic interest is in whether standardised international EIA protocols can be recalibrated for climate non-stationarity without losing the legal clarity that regulators depend on. That is a question with genuine methodological stakes, and the specialisation I have chosen is the most direct route toward being equipped to answer it rigorously.
